What is LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy?

You may be here because you have had experiences in the past in which you felt misunderstood by a therapist around issues of gender, sexuality or other aspects of identity. LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy doesn’t refer to a theory or set of interventions, but rather to how the therapist approaches working with their clients. Affirmative therapists aim to support their clients through working to create a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship. At the core of this approach is the understanding that every person’s identity should be treated with dignity, respect, and openness. We also understand that everyone has their own experiences with their identities and their own way they want to express their gender and sexuality. We work collaboratively with our clients to help them identify changes they want to make in their lives to live authentically. Whether it’s exploring and understanding your gender and/or sexual identity, navigating relationships, navigating social transitioning, understanding your values in relation to your identity, or learning how to practice self-care in our current political environment, working with an affirmative therapist can help you in the process of living an authentic and meaningful life.

How working with an affirmative therapist can make a difference?

Some LGBTQ+ folks who have tried therapy in the past may have felt that their therapist didn’t quite “get it,” or felt that they’ve had to teach their therapist about their identity. Working with an affirmative therapist creates a safe therapeutic relationship that is based on trust, enables you to get to the root of what you are coming to therapy for, and allows you to have healing emotional, relational, and self experiences. Affirmative therapists educate themselves on clinical issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community and aim to understand how heterosexism impacts our society at large.  If you’re exploring your sexual or gender identity, working with an affirmative therapist would allow you to explore how your identity impacts your mental health, your relationships (romantic, friendships, bio- or chosen family, etc.), and how you live a meaningful life. Even if your gender and/or sexual identity are not at the focus of your therapeutic goals, an affirmative therapist is able to help you work toward your goals in a way that honors and respects your identity.

Intersectionality & Cultural Humility

We understand that as therapists are human beings with our own biases that we need to examine and confront. In order to do so, we approach our clients and their concerns with openness and curiosity and take the stance that you are the authority of your experience.

We commit to our own continued education on the issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community to remain culturally aware and connected to the concerns and issues facing our clients.

In therapy, cultural humility refers to our desire and need to be aware of and reflective about our own biases and limitations, aware of the power differential inherent in our position as therapists (and perhaps in our own personal identities), and to remain committed to ongoing learning and self-examination.

Through an intersectional lens we recognize that each person has multiple aspects of identity. Our gender, race, religion, ability/disability status, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity — all exist within us and intersect in how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. Intersectionality acknowledges that the ways in which we navigate through society are impacted by all of these factors, and that no singular facet of our identity can be disentangled from the rest without risking reducing us to something less than our whole selves..

We would be honored if you do entrust yourself to our care. We understand our clients gender and sexual identities as they are impacted by the other aspects of their identity. We will help you work towards your therapeutic goals in a manner that honors all aspects of who you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Length varies. Some concerns resolve in several months; longstanding patterns may require a year or more. Progress is reviewed regularly, and goals are adjusted collaboratively.
Most clients attend once weekly. More frequent sessions are an option when deeper momentum is desired and schedules allow and/ or if a person is in crisis or a period of upheaval.
Verbal exploration is central, yet the process also attends to bodily sensations, imagery, and emotions in real time. Some clients find that the practices like mindfulness, journaling or other expressive techniques between sessions help to anchor insights.

It’s completely natural to feel apprehensive about processing difficult emotions—many of us struggle with this. AEDP is a collaborative therapy that meets you where you are. Your therapist will never push you to process something you’re not ready for, but will gently invite you to explore what is emerging. If you feel overwhelmed, your therapist is trained in emotion regulation techniques to help you stay grounded and feel safe as you move through the process.
