Learn to Slow Down

We help you to be more in touch with your body and your nervous system and what it needs to feel calmer.

Understand how Anxiety is a Loop

By identifying patterns of stress and coping, we help you see how anxiety is trying to help you, but is actually keeping you stuck.

Expand your Emotional Capacity

Once you are calmer, we help you pay attention to the emotional wisdom underneath your anxiety; helping you be less reactive and more resilient.

Compassionate Support to help you feel calmer, stronger, and more in control

Do you feel chronically overwhelmed, harried, “stressed out” or worried? Do you experience physical symptoms along with (or instead) of the mental symptoms of worry or racing thoughts? For instance, do you have a lot of digestive distress, ever feel short of breath or tight in your chest, generally tense in your body? More than a quarter of American adults report symptoms of anxiety, and more than one half of all young adults (ages 18-24) do. And these numbers are down from the peak of the Covid pandemic, though higher than they were in 2019. We are clearly living through very stressful times and we all have to learn new ways to release some of this tension and feel more grounded and at ease in our own lives.

Through RRP's integrated approach to anxiety, we help you get out of your head and back into your body and heart. Visit us for in-person AEDP therapy or attend online across New Jersey & New York.

What Is Anxiety? What is Stress?

“Resilience is not simply about bouncing back; it is about the deep, often transformative process of adapting, growing, and finding meaning in the face of adversity.”

We think the best way to think about the difference between stress and anxiety involves pervasiveness, duration and whether or not there are triggers. Stress has long been thought of as our response to situations or experiences in our lives that we perceive as a threat; things like deadlines, a fight with a spouse, the loss of a job. Good and happy things can also be “stressful,” like getting married or moving into your own home. In all of these situations there is a lot to respond to, perhaps a lot to do, and one has to figure out how to approach or deal with the “threat.”

Anxiety, on the other hand, is often a more chronic state of dis-ease that we can feel emotionally (mentally) or physically or both. Sometimes the accumulation of too many stressors, especially occurring in a short period of time, can lead to the more ongoing experience of anxiety. We find ourselves worrying about one or many things, more vigilant than we had been before, trying to anticipate and control things, including things that are realistically, outside of our control. This is an honest attempt to decrease our distressing feelings, but it often leads to feeling constantly pre-occupied, spinning in our own minds with no apparent way out.

Anxiety is a normal and even healthy human capacity and reaction. Being able to perceive threat and to have the wherewithal to gather resources sufficient to respond to danger, is how we survive. But chronic stress or anxiety is different. It is exhausting instead of energizing, and can lead to problems sleeping, irritability, reactivity in relationships, physical symptoms (including panic), distractibility and an increase in mistakes, and unhealthy forms of coping like substance use or overeating.

Our Approach to Anxiety and Stress Therapy

Anxiety requires a creative and integrative approach combining all the best tools of psychotherapy

Anxiety can manifest in many ways. Sometimes people don’t even recognize they are experiencing anxiety. They tend to be emotional/mental and physical in nature.

Emotional/ mental/ cognitive symptoms include: constant worry, thoughts racing, feelings of dread, restlessness or overwhelm, difficulty concentrating, repetitive or intrusive thoughts, feeling “jumpy” or unusually reactive or irritable.

Physical symptoms include: stomach/ digestive issues, rapid heartbeat (or sense of pounding heart), muscle tension/ soreness, headaches, fatigue, trouble sleeping (insomnia).

Human beings are social creatures. We function best when we are together and feel supported, seen and understood. So much of what perpetuates excessive anxiety is feeling the weight of having to figure it all out on our own. And, let’s face it, we live in an increasingly isolated world and often feel too alone. The simple experience of being supported and understood can itself take a lot of the pressure off. Many different forms of therapy have been found to be reliably helpful in significantly reducing people’s subjective experience of stress and levels of anxiety. Untreated anxiety has a tendency to snowball and feed on itself and can become quite debilitating across many aspects of life.

At Resilience Restored Psychotherapy, we work with adults and children. Children often need a more concrete approach and to learn skills. They also benefit from our work with parents to help them see their children as resilient rather than fragile; in need of empathy and support, but also capable of facing challenges and growing. Our work with adults can be more directed at the roots of the problem and also provides all the support, perspective, skills, empathy, and self-understanding outlined above. Our informed and experienced multipronged approach to anxiety helps people feel calmer and more at ease across all domains of life.

If anxiety or panic is affecting your daily life, AEDP can help you process overwhelming emotions in a way that creates lasting relief. By addressing both the root causes and the body’s emotional responses, our psychotherapists in Montclair guide you toward emotional regulation so you can feel more grounded and present in your life.

We provide in-person therapy in a lovely space in Montclair, NJ as well as virtual care to people throughout NY/ NJ. We provide compassionate, trauma-informed care through a relational lens for acute or chronic anxiety and for PTSD. We see you as a person experiencing anxiety and not an anxiety “case.” We know whatever is causing your anxiety is likely due to multiple factors, but can be treated in the context of a committed relationship of care that is focused on getting to know you well and stepping in to help in all the ways we are trained to do so.

Through our depth-oriented, but practical and somatic approach, we help you explore the underlying emotions that often generate anxiety and avoidance, as well as discover your inner resilience and strength.

When "Normal" Anxiety Becomes Too Much

Normal anxiety is healthy and adaptive. It is our alert system, telling us when to pay attention and what to prioritize. Think of it as a part of a mental/emotional immune system. But when it is in too much supply it overwhelms the system and things start to break down. At Resilience Restored Psychotherapy, we have come to understand problems with anxiety as stemming from one or more of the following:

Discomfort with Feelings/ Emotions

Lack of faith in oneself and one's own resilience

Too many demands and too few resources being deployed

Feeling too alone with stressors and anxiety

At RRP, we are not rigid about our approach. We bring a multidimensional approach to address any and all of these pathways to excess anxiety. We prioritize establishing a safe, caring relationship with you in which you know you are no longer alone in dealing with your problems or concerns. We help you realistically assess what the demands or threats are and what resources you have at your disposal that you may or may not (yet) be making use of. We help you see the triggers for your anxiety as well as the patterns that may exist that keep it high. We teach you some grounding and mindfulness techniques to calm acute anxiety and learn more adaptive ways of talking to yourself about your problems to keep the inner critic at bay. We help you respect anxiety as your own alert system and get curious about what it needs you to pay attention to and make room for. We help you learn to feel your feelings, whatever they are, without getting overwhelmed by them, so you can make use of their life enhancing qualities. If these feelings are related to old or past trauma, we help you explore and process those at a pace you can handle and is helpful. We will remind you to lean into your strengths and your natural resilience to trust that you too, like all of us, can deal with tough things and grow from the experience.

Together, we'll unlock your inner strength and guide you toward lasting transformation.

We provide you with multiple ways to be in touch depending on your comfort. Our Approach

How Our Approach Works

We offer a trauma-informed, attachment-oriented, depth-oriented and present-minded approach in working with all conditions and issues. We are flexible and meet you where you are starting from. No matter that place, we have a deep belief in your capacity for healing and growth.

1. We create a safe space for healing

The foundation of AEDP therapy is building a strong, trusting relationship where you feel truly seen, respected, and cared for. This safety allows you to let down your defenses and be open to the healing process.

In this safe space, we explore your thoughts, feelings, memories, and parts of yourself that may need healing or attention. Together, we uncover the experiences that may have shaped you and invite new, positive experiences into your healing journey.

We stay with your emotions as they arise, focusing on processing them deeply and mindfully. By grounding ourselves in the present moment and tuning into your body, we work toward resolution and integration.

As we process difficult emotions, we unlock and transform past pain, allowing space for healing and growth. This leads to a sense of hope and a new sense of possibility in your life.

After deep emotional processing, we reflect on the changes you’ve experienced. Together, we celebrate the healing that’s occurred, update your self-understanding, and integrate healthier ways of relating and coping that you may not have had access to before.
