Compassionate, Integrative Therapy for Depression & Low Mood
If you’ve come to this page, you may be feeling heavy, indifferent, tired, sad, lacking motivation, disconnected from yourself and others, or struggling to feel any joy or even interest. Or you may be wondering if you actually “have” depression. There are many things that contribute to depression or low mood, and there is a continuum of what might colloquially be called depression—from feeling down sometimes to having significant difficulty keeping up with life’s demands.
Many people find it hard to acknowledge they are depressed either because they don’t feel they have sufficient “reason” to be depressed or because depression is still sometimes seen as a lack of willpower. Being down or depressed has nothing to do with a lack of willpower because getting through the day when you are depressed is actually very hard work. Instead, what is often happening is a combination of emotional, relational, life circumstance, and biological factors.
At Resilience Restored Psychotherapy, we do not see depression as having a single cause for all people, nor is there a single solution. We first see you as a person who has entered a difficult period of life during which you are struggling, need support, and may benefit from the help of another mind and heart to sort through the experiences, feelings, and situations that have led to this point. We also see you as someone who is resilient and has strengths and capacities that can be brought into the healing process.

When Life Feels Heavy: Understanding Depression
“Resilience is not simply about bouncing back; it is about the deep, often transformative process of adapting, growing, and finding meaning in the face of adversity.”
A sense of heaviness, even in the body, is almost a universal aspect of depressed moods. You may find yourself easily, have little energy, difficulty concentrating, or struggle to feel motivated. You may experience a harsh inner critic, hopelessness, or feelings of worthlessness. Some people, especially men, experience depression more as irritability than sadness.
Many people also experience bodily symptoms such as changes in appetite, sleep, or libido. A difficult day or two, especially in response to a stressful life event, is not necessarily depression. But when a number of these symptoms occur most days over a period of weeks, it may indicate a depressive episode.
Depressed moods can arise from many things. Grief after the loss of a loved one often feels like depression, but we understand the cause. Chronic stress, burnout, trauma, relationship struggles, major life transitions, loneliness, or longstanding patterns of self-criticism can all contribute to depression. Some people are also more genetically predisposed to depressed moods, and certain medical conditions can increase vulnerability.
Often, it is not just one thing. Life sometimes has a way of accumulating emotional burdens until we begin to feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, and disconnected from ourselves and others.

What Depression Therapy Looks Like

Your therapist will work with you first to create a safe and curious environment in which your thoughts, feelings, reactions, and experiences are welcome. Depression often leaves people feeling alone, ashamed, misunderstood, or disconnected from themselves and others. One of the healing aspects of therapy is having the experience of being deeply listened to and emotionally understood.
Building a Safe Therapeutic Relationship
Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of meaningful change in therapy. We strive to create a therapeutic environment that is compassionate, collaborative, emotionally attuned, and respectful of your pace.
Some people come into therapy ready to explore deeply. Others feel uncertain, skeptical, emotionally numb, or ov
erwhelmed. All of those reactions are understandable. And any version is a good starting point.
Exploring Your Emotional World
Depression often narrows emotional experience. Some people feel overwhelmed by sadness or anxiety, while others feel emotionally shut down or disconnected from themselves entirely.
Therapy helps you gently begin paying attention to your inner experience in a manageable and emotionally safe way. This may involve exploring patterns in thoughts, relationships, emotional reactions, bodily sensations, or daily life. Gradually, a little color returns to your emotional life, breaking up the gray. You become capable again of feeling other things, including joy, curiosity, and ease.
Processing Painful Experiences
For many people, depression is connected to unresolved emotional experiences, trauma, grief, chronic stress, or painful relationship dynamics. Therapy can help you process these experiences instead of carrying them alone or pushing them away. Depression is really a mood state that sits on top of our varied emotions. As we started to become aware again of different emotional states, depression begins to lift
Depending on your needs, this work may involve AEDP, psychodynamic therapy, EMDR, mindfulness-based approaches, somatic awareness, cognitive-behavior work (CBT), or supportive insight-oriented work.
Strengthening Self-Compassion and Resilience
Many people struggling with depression experience a harsh inner critic and excessive self-judgment. Therapy can help you develop a more compassionate and realistic relationship with yourself.
At Resilience Restored Psychotherapy, we do not see people as broken. We see people as struggling under emotional burdens while still possessing resilience, strengths, and capacities that may have become obscured by depression. Part of our work together is helping you get back in touch with those strengths, capacities and resilience you already possess.
Creating Change in Daily Life
Insight, emotional processing, and somatic awareness are so helpful. But they may not always be enough. Therapy also involves helping you create changes in your day-to-day life that support emotional wellbeing.
This may include:
- improving boundaries in relationships
- reducing isolation and avoidance
- addressing perfectionism and self-criticism
- improving emotional communication
- increasing self-care and stress management
- reconnecting with pleasure, meaning, and connection
Through our depth-oriented, but practical and somatic approach, we help you explore the underlying emotions that often get buried and become depression, as well as discover your inner resilience and strength.

A Holistic and Integrative Approach to Depression
Just as there is not one single cause of depression, there is not one single approach that helps everyone heal. We take an integrative approach tailored to the individual person.
Therapy may involve helping you:
process unresolved feelings or trauma
slow down and understand your emotional experience
develop healthier coping strategies
identify self-critical or perfectionistic tendencies
improve emotional regulation and self-care
examine patterns in relationships
reconnect with supportive relationships and meaningful experiences
Our primary orientation is AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), an experiential and emotionally focused therapy that helps people process emotions deeply and safely while reconnecting with resilience, vitality, and a more authentic sense of self.
We are also psychodynamically-oriented and trauma-informed, meaning we pay attention to how past experiences and attachment relationships may continue to shape present struggles. Some clinicians in our practice also incorporate EMDR for trauma processing, mindfulness-based approaches for nervous system regulation, CBT strategies when thoughts are contributing significantly to mood, and DBT skills for emotional regulation and communication.
You and your therapist will work collaboratively to determine what approach feels most supportive and effective for you
Together, we'll unlock your inner strength and guide you toward lasting transformation.
We provide you with multiple ways to be in touch depending on your comfort. Our Approach
Why Depression Often Has Deeper Roots
People can become depressed in response to trauma, chronic stress, burnout, grief, or difficult life circumstances. Sometimes, however, depression develops gradually over years of relating to oneself and the world in painful ways.
Problematic or emotionally wounding attachment relationships early in life can leave people vulnerable to later depression. People may learn to cope in emotionally constricted, unpredictable, or critical environments by repressing feelings, disconnecting from needs, or turning criticism against themselves.
Over time, this emotional constriction can contribute to depression, anxiety, emotional numbness, or substance use.
Perfectionism can also be a major contributor to depression. The constant pressure to achieve, perform, or never make mistakes becomes emotionally exhausting over time.
Depression does not always feel like active sadness. Sometimes it feels more like numbness, emotional shut down, emptiness, or disconnection. At times, depression can even function as an unconscious protection against overwhelming feelings. Instead of fully feeling painful emotions, the system simply shuts down.
At other times, feelings of depression can serve as signals that something important in our lives needs attention.

Depression and Related Struggles We Help With
As you progress through Depression Therapy in Montclair, you may begin to notice profound shifts, such as:
- major depressive disorder
- chronic low mood or dysthymia
- burnout and emotional exhaustion
- depression related to trauma or PTSD
- grief and loss
- perfectionism and chronic self-criticism
- anxiety and depression occurring together
- loneliness, emptiness, or identity struggles
- depression related to life transitions
We recognize that depression looks different in different people. Some people appear highly functional externally while privately struggling with hopelessness, numbness, exhaustion, or self-attack. Others may feel immobilized and unable to keep up with daily life. We tailor therapy to the individual person rather than assuming one experience of depression fits everyone.
Reconnecting With Vitality and Meaning
One of the painful aspects of depression is that it can convince people that nothing will change and that they will always feel this way. Depression narrows perspective. It reduces energy, possibility, connection, and hope.
As people begin to feel safer emotionally, process painful experiences, and develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves, many begin to experience greater clarity, energy, meaning, and emotional vitality.
Healing from depression does not mean never struggling again. It means developing greater resilience, self-understanding, emotional freedom, and capacity to move through life’s challenges without losing yourself in the process.
